Is it possible to cure your aching back with ancient remedies? Think about this it has only been since the early 1980's that MRI and microscopic surgery have been in use. MRI's to detect and identify back problems and microscopic surgery to repair herniated disc without the trauma of major surgery. It would have been unheard of just 20- 30 years ago that someone having back surgery could go to a day spinal surgery clinic be operated on at 7 am and be home resting before 10 am. But that's exactly what happened to me. However ever since humans climbed out of the trees and probably before that we have been plagued with aching backs. Surely their are ancient remedies for relieving an aching back. Remedies that are time tested to work. Are these remedies and practices still valid today?
The answer is yes. They are many methods and techniques for curing back pain that are just as valid today as they were in the days of the ancient Greeks. I am sure that Plato or even Alexander The Great suffered with aching back muscles and or herniated discs. So what did they do for relief? Below are some proven methods used by our ancestors to ease lower back pain.
1. Essential Oils: Since the beginning of time many oils derived from plants and flowers have been used to ease aching muscles. lavender oil is the hands down favorite along with eucalyptus and chamomile. Lavender is anti-inflammatory as well as an antiseptic. A gentle massage of warm lavender can help relieve a sore aching back. Plus you will smell great. It will also reduce your stress level and lift your mood.
2. Laying on of hands - Dowsing - Energy Healing: The touch of caring hands can heal. By being aware of the energy levels in and around the body a skilled healer can manipulate these energies to help heal. As far out as it seems it does work.
3. Acupuncture: Everyone is familiar with this ancient Chinese practice of inserting very thin needles into various energy meridians of the body. Acupuncture can be very effective in pain treatment. So much so that most health plans will cover acupuncturere therapy.
4. Reflexology: Reflexology is another "hands on" therapy tracing it's orgins back to the egyptians. It is a natural healing art where a skilled reflexologist applies pressure to certain points located on the hands and fee. Applying this pressure removes energy blocks, promotes increased circulation throughout the body and improved muscle and body.
5. Inversion Therapy: The idea of using gravity to reduce the pressure on an aching back and or herniated disc can also be traced back to the ancients. It has been said that Socrates used a system of ropes and pulleys to hang a back sufferer upside down.
The above methods and practices are just a few of the ancient cures for an aching back. All of them have some level of effectiveness. Are they more effective than modern medicine, drugs and surgery. Some would argue yes. Plus the fact that they are risk free with no side effects unless you are allergic to Lavender. We are very fortunate to live at a time when we can take advantage of modern science and the amazing advances in the treatment of back pain. However I think the real advantage we have is the ability to take the best of ancient cures and modern medicine and used them to cure back problems.
